Child Labor in America
"
In 1908 the National Child Labour Committee employed Lewis Hine as their staff investigator and photographer. Hine travelled the country taking pictures of children working in factories.
In one 12 month period he covered over 12,000 miles. Factory owners often refused Hine permission to take photographs and accused him of muckraking. To gain access Hine sometimes posed as a fire inspector. Hine worked for the National Child Labour Committee for eight years. Hine told one audience: "Perhaps you are weary of child labour pictures. Well, so are the rest
of us, but we propose to make you and the whole country so sick and tired of the whole business that when the time for action comes, child labour pictures will be records of the past."  This History Place website provides a large collection of these photographs that helped to bring an end to child labour in America.

The Dramas of Haymarket offers an interpretive presentation of a variety of primary sources and puts them into historical context. Presented in the form of a drama with prologue, five acts, and an epilogue, the Dramas of Haymarket is a complete chronological account of the events of the period. History teachers and students alike will find this site a wonderful supplement to the study of the United States during this period.
"In 1886 workers in Chicago endured 14-hour workdays, with no paid vacation or sick days, at a time when employment was scarce and class divisions remained firm. That spring, protests over labor conditions and police brutality culminated in an encounter between protestors and policemen in Haymarket Square; a dynamite bomb was thrown at the police during the clash, killing seven officers and injuring 60 others, along with countless civilians. Eight labor leaders were convicted of
murder, although the bomber was never identified. On August 19 of that year, seven of the accused were sentenced to death for their suspected involvement. ... the eventual execution of four of the labor leaders, and the pardoning of the remaining three. Each chapter contains a detailed narrative, photos of the participants, and images of primary documents. Interviews with a historian, a labor official, and descendants of those involved convey the significance of the riot and its aftermath."

"During his life the New York garment manufacturer, Ben Goldstein, collected works that stirred his very personal interest in the city of his birth, the American people, and the human condition during the first half of the twentieth century. Goldstein assembled outstanding holdings of works by creators who shared his social concerns. Among these artists were women, African Americans, and the Mexican muralists who were so influential at the time. Life of the People, created by the Library of Congress, is an online exhibition of Goldstein's collection of prints and drawings" (nyhedsbrev)

"In 1944, 63 young men stood trial for resisting the draft at the
concentration camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. ..  [They] refused to be drafted from an American concentration camp.  They were ready to fight for their country, but not before the government restored their rights as U.S. citizens and released their families from camp." It was a classic example of civil disobedience -- but the government prosecuted them as criminals and Japanese American leaders and veterans ostracized them as traitors.
This web site accompanies a documentary film about the draft resistance movement within the Japanese American relocation camps, ... Included at the web site are text, a timeline, curriculum guides for teachers, personal narratives, documents (letters, articles, statements, etc.), and personal narratives

This site features a collection of newspaper articles written during the time (1942) Japanese Americans were relocated into internment camps. "When reading these articles it must be understood that they reflect their time; words and ideas repugnant and appalling to us today are used, and discussed, freely, in the News' columns. It should also be noted that some news articles were approved by military censors before publication. In addition, every newspaper editor was excessively careful about printing information of potential use to the enemy." (infomine)

"Few events have as dramatically affected the lives of Japanese Americans in the 20th century as the issuance of Executive Order #9066 that resulted in their internment during World War II.
The experience of Japanese Americans in internment camps during the war is richly documented in the holdings of a number of California repositories ...all members of the California Digital Library's Online Archive of California. Curators from the eight participating OAC members selected a broad range of primary sources to be digitized, including: photographs, documents, manuscripts, paintings, drawings, letters, and oral histories. Over 10,000 digital images have been created complimented by 20,000 pages of electronic transcriptions of document and oral histories." (nyhedsbrev)

"For every occurrence there is a cause. This may not always be immediately evident,
but by tracing events backward, we can usually arrive at the root cause.  The occasion of the event may not necessarily be the cause. In analyzing events that occur in human society, we must take into consideration not only physical causes but also physchological and philosophical causes or reasons for people acting and reacting in a certain way to incidences. Events that have occurred in history are no different.  This WebQuest  will help you to understand the causes of World War II and of U.S. involvement in the War.  It will also call upon you to apply the steps in the writing process to create a persuasive essay."

"On December 8, 1941 (the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor), Alan Lomax, then "assistant in charge" of the Archive of American Folk Song sent a telegram to fieldworkers in ten different localities across the United States, asking them to collect "man-on-the-street" reactions of ordinary Americans to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the subsequent declaration of war by the United States. A second series of interviews was recorded in January and February 1942. Both collections are included on this website. They feature a wide diversity of opinion concerning the war and other social and political issues of the day, such as racial prejudice and labour disputes. The result is a portrait of everyday life in America as the United States entered World War II." (spartacus)
