Den amerikanske arbejderbevægelse 1800-1960 "An encyclopedia of the Trade Union movement in USA between 1800 and 1960. The website includes entries on important events and issues (12) union journals and newspapers (8), union organizations (6) and biographies of trade union leaders (52). The text within each entry is linked to other relevant pages in the encyclopedia. In this way it is possible to research individual people and events in great detail. The sources are also hyper-linked so the student is able to find out about the writer, artist, newspaper and organization that produced the material."(fra spartacus). Meget elevegnet |

Peter Cooper - USA damplokomotivet "In 1830 Peter Cooper's Canton Iron Works in Baltimore built America's first steam locomotive. His business flourished and he established the largest blast furnace in America at Philippsburg, New Jersey. Cooper was also involved in laying the first Atlantic cable, and was president of the New York, Newfoundland & London Telegraph Company. Cooper had a social conscience and in 1875 he established the radical Greenback Party. However, his attempts to get himself elected president of the United States ended in failure. This website provides a brief overview of this amazing man." (Spartacus) |

Børnearbejde i USA 1908-1912 Child Labor in America "In 1908 the National Child Labour Committee employed Lewis Hine as their staff investigator and photographer. Hine travelled the country taking pictures of children working in factories. In one 12 month period he covered over 12,000 miles. Factory owners often refused Hine permission to take photographs and accused him of muckraking. To gain access Hine sometimes posed as a fire inspector. Hine worked for the National Child Labour Committee for eight years. Hine told one audience: "Perhaps you are weary of child labour pictures. Well, so are the rest of us, but we propose to make you and the whole country so sick and tired of the whole business that when the time for action comes, child labour pictures will be records of the past." This History Place website provides a large collection of these photographs that helped to bring an end to child labour in America." (spartacus?) |

kampen mod børnearbejde i USA "In 1900 approximately two million children were working in mills, mines, fields, factories, stores, and on city streets across the United States. The 1900 census, which counted workers aged 10 to 15, found that 18.2 percent of the country's children between those ages were working. The census report helped to spark a national movement to end child labor in the United States. It took organizational form in 1904 with the founding of the National Child Labor Committee. ... Jim Zwick's excellent website provides a wealth of information on the campaign that took place to bring an end to child labor in the United States." (spartacus) |

The Dramas of Haymarket A+ / **** The Dramas of Haymarket offers an interpretive presentation of a variety of primary sources and puts them into historical context. Presented in the form of a drama with prologue, five acts, and an epilogue, the Dramas of Haymarket is a complete chronological account of the events of the period. History teachers and students alike will find this site a wonderful supplement to the study of the United States during this period. "In 1886 workers in Chicago endured 14-hour workdays, with no paid vacation or sick days, at a time when employment was scarce and class divisions remained firm. That spring, protests over labor conditions and police brutality culminated in an encounter between protestors and policemen in Haymarket Square; a dynamite bomb was thrown at the police during the clash, killing seven officers and injuring 60 others, along with countless civilians. Eight labor leaders were convicted of murder, although the bomber was never identified. On August 19 of that year, seven of the accused were sentenced to death for their suspected involvement. ... the eventual execution of four of the labor leaders, and the pardoning of the remaining three. Each chapter contains a detailed narrative, photos of the participants, and images of primary documents. Interviews with a historian, a labor official, and descendants of those involved convey the significance of the riot and its aftermath." |

"This collection showcases more than 3,800 images of original manuscripts, broadsides, photographs, prints and artifacts relating to the Haymarket Affair. The violent confrontation between Chicago police and labor protesters in 1886 proved to be a pivotal setback in the struggle for American workers' rights. These materials pertain to: the May 4, 1886 meeting and bombing; to the trial, conviction and subsequent appeals of those accused of inciting the bombing; and to the execution of four of the convicted and the later pardon of the remaining defendants. ... The cornerstone is the presentation, as images and searchable text, of the transcript of the 3,200 pages of proceedings from the murder trial of State of Illinois v. August Spies, et al."... om Stålmagnaten Andrew Carnegie "Faced with poverty in Scotland, Andrew Carnegie's family emigrated to America. Carnegie went on to become the richest man in the world. After amassing a fortune by crushing his competitors and exploiting his workers, Carnegie, in a move that underscored his inner conflicts, systematically gave away millions. One of the most difficult episodes Andrew Carnegie's life - and one that revealed the steel magnate's conflicting beliefs regarding the rights of trade unions - was the bitter conflict in 1892 at his steel plant in Homestead, Pennsylvania. Carnegie's involvement in the union-breaking action left many men dead or wounded and forever tarnished Carnegie's reputation as a benevolent employer and a champion of working people. .." This may not always be immediately evident, but by tracing events backward, we can usually arrive at the root cause. The occasion of the event may not necessarily be the cause. In analyzing events that occur in human society, we must take into consideration not only physical causes but also physchological and philosophical causes or reasons for people acting and reacting in a certain way to incidences. Events that have occurred in history are no different. This WebQuest will help you to understand the causes of World War II and of U.S. involvement in the War.
