Castro, according to a newly declassified tape and White House documents. The
rapprochement was cut off by the assassination of Kennedy. This new evidence
suggests that Castro saw Kennedy's killing as a setback. He tried to restart a
dialogue with the next administration, but Lyndon Johnson was at first too

In 1940 Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first American president
to secretly record his telephone conversations. Jimmy Carter is the
only president since Roosevelt to refuse to tape conversations.
However, it was Lyndon B. Johnson who was the obsessive taper of
conversations. A recent study showed he recorded 400 hours of phone
calls. The most interesting of these include the conversations that
took place between Johnson and J. Edgar Hoover. The National Archives
also has a tape recording of a telephone call where Johnson explains
how he blackmailed Earl Warren to carry out an investigation into the
assassination of Kennedy.

credit for that? The credit belongs to a man who has been abused by the
press. A president who is much greater than history is willing to
portray him, because he was not their kind of guy... President Reagan
did it, by establishing something that he has been denounced for.
Criticized for. Castigated for. Star Wars." So said the prize-winning
journalist, Jack Anderson on 22nd September, 1999. Mikhail Gorbachev was
also quick to praise Reagan last week. However, not all political
commentators agreed with Gorbachev. William Rivers Pitt wrote:
"Virtually every significant problem facing the American people today
