In June 1913 Ambrose Bierce went to Mexico where he disappeared. It is not known exactly when or how he died but it has been suggested he was killed in January, 1914. Ambrose Bierce's classic work, The Devil's Dictionary was first published under the title, The Cynic's Word Book, in 1906. Definitions include: Learning (the kind of ignorance distinguishing the studious); Education (that which discloses to the wise and disguises from the foolish their lack of understanding); History (an account mostly false, of events mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers mostly knaves, and soldiers mostly fools); Mad (affected with a high degree of intellectual independence); Happiness (an agreeable sensation arising from contemplating the misery of another) and Positive (mistaken at the top of one's voice).
