Stereotypes
"...This site tries to
help us see clearly by presenting a reading list of fiction and
nonfiction
works by native American authors writing about the people who
populated this
continent before the European settlement began. The idea is to
strip away false and demeaning stereotypes about the First Nations
that separate us from our common humanity
and poison our minds. While you may find
yourself unable to share all the views expressed here, the sobering
commentary raises significant issues of appropriateness.

Recording Trip
"The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip is
a multiformat
ethnographic field collection that includes nearly 700
sound recordings, as well as fieldnotes,
..documenting a three-month, 6,502-mile trip through the southern
United States." In 1939, John Avery Lomax and Ruby
Terrill Lomax "recorded approximately 25 hours of folk music
from more than
300 performers. These recordings represent a broad spectrum of
traditional musical styles, including ballads, blues, children's songs, cowboy
songs, fiddle tunes, field hollers,
lullabies, play-party songs, religious dramas, spirituals, and work songs. Photographic prints from
the
Lomaxes' other Southern states expeditions, as well as their other recording trips
made under the auspices of the Library of Congress, illustrate the
collection."

American Notes: Travels in America 1750-1920
(Library of Congress, American
memory)
"There are two sections to the exhibit. There's a set of over
250 narratives by Americans and foreign visitors about their
travels in America. Then there's a 32- volume set of
manuscript sources called Early Western Travels 1748-1846
(which itself was published between 1904 and 1907.)
In addition to the usual subject and title index, this
collection also has an author index which covers "A.C." to
"Yankee Girl." More recognizable names include Charles
Dickens, James Fenimore Cooper, and Washington Irving.
Most of the items I looked at were books and shorter printed
items, with titles like "Dead Towns of Georgia," "Palmer's
Journal of travels over the Rocky Mountains, 1845-1846," and
"Wyeth's Oregon." ... (researchbuzz)
