Guide to
blackhistory.eb.com/
The Encyclopaedia Britannica Guide to Black History contains 600
articles that are illustrated with historical film clips and audio
recordings as well as hundreds of photographs and other images. The
material is organized in such a way that enables the visitor to examine
five centuries of black heritage through five distinct time periods, from
the slave revolts of early America through the successes of the Civil
Rights Movement. Each era is further divided by topic, with biographies
and photographs of notable people and descriptions and documents of
historic events.

"Black History Month (BHM) is held every October in Britain. The aims are to:
(1) Promote knowledge of Black History and experience. (2) Disseminate
information on positive Black contributions to British Society. (3) Heighten the
confidence and awareness of Black people in their cultural heritage. The origins
of BHM go back to 1926 when Carter G Woodson, editor for thirty years of the
Journal of Negro History, established African Caribbean celebrations in America.
It is still celebrated there in February each year. In Britain, the BHM has now
grown to over 1400 events. This website celebrate BHM all year round and is
regularly updated." (spartacus)

Blacks in Victorian Britain
"There were Black people in Britain in Roman times, and there has been a
continuous Black presence here since 1555. The eighteenth century saw a great
expansion in Britain's Black population. After the War of the Spanish Succession
in 1713, British slavers dominated the infamous Atlantic slave trade. Some
slaves were landed and sold at London, Liverpool or Bristol, but many Black
people were brought as domestic servants by returning sea-captains, colonial
administrators and plantation owners. For the English aristocracy and the newly
rich, a Black page or handmaiden was an asset to be shown off as evidence of
exotic wealth, so in the 18th century Black people were ironically more evident
in the art and writing of the time than they were to be in the early Victorian
period. This website provides an interesting collection of Black Victorian
images" (spartacus)
