bullet www.americanlynching.com/audio-old.html     American Lynching and music
Lynching is the illegal execution of an accused person by a mob. It was originally a system of punishment used by whites against African American slaves. There was a decline in lynching during the First World War but more than seventy blacks were murdered in this way in 1918. Ten black soldiers, several still in their army uniforms, were amongst those lynched. Between 1919 and 1922, a further 239 blacks were lynched by white mobs and many more were killed by individual acts of violence and unrecorded lynchings. This website provides recordings that deal with lynching: Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday) The Death of Emmett Till (Bob Dylan), Vigilante Man (Woody Guthrie), Taneytown (Steve Earle), Ballad of Medgar Evers (Phil Ochs) and A Pawn in their Game (Bob Dylan).

"
Bennie J. McRae, the creator of this website, quotes Art T. Burton, author of Black, Red and Deadly: "Regrettably, many of the accomplishments and sagas of African Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans and Asian Americans have never been told in book form. There is a need for the total history of the American West to be told so there will be a more complete picture. Members of these groups played a crucial role in the development of our nation, and the West is no exception". This website attempts to redress the balance and provides a large number of links to resources on this subject." (spartacus)

bullet www.liu.edu/cwis/cwp/library/african/west/west.htm    African Americans and the old west
"
The saga of the Old West is filled with tales of adventure with pioneers roving the plains seeking the unknown in the vast territorial lands west of the Mississippi River. Among those pioneers were identifiable contingents of African Americans who also roamed the western plains and helped to establish what we know of as the Old West. History books do trace and document the development of the United States and its territorial expansion Westward, but very little covers the inclusive part of African Americans as early pioneer dwellers of the Old West. Records are now surfacing taken from facts printed in primary resources, books, state and county documents, including verbal ancestral accounts of the many places, and faces of the early black settlers living in towns all across the Old West. This website provides links to these resources." (spartacus)

Who are the Legends of Tuskegee and what do they have in common? This three-part web exhibit highlights the achievements of Washington, Carver and the Tuskegee Airmen. Booker Taliafero Washington, George Washington Carver and the Tuskegee Airmen all came to Tuskegee and created their own legends. Tuskegee was a bold experiment and a site of major African-American achievements for over 100 years. "Tuskegee Airmen"
refers to all who were involved in the so-called "Tuskegee Experiment," the Army Air Corps program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft. ...The Tuskegee Airmen overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II. They proved conclusively that African Americans could fly and maintain sophisticated combat aircraft.
The Tuskegee Airmen's achievements, together with the men and women who
supported them, paved the way for full integration of the U.S. military.

On 24th June 1937 Paul Robeson made a speech in London about art and politics: "Like every true artist, I have longed to see my talent contributing in an unmistakably clear manner to the cause of humanity. Every artist, every scientist, every writer must decide now where he stands. There are no impartial observers. The battle front is everywhere. There is no sheltered rear. The artist must take sides. He must elect to fight for freedom or for slavery." During the McCarthy Era these political beliefs resulted in him been blacklisted in the United States. He was still highly popular in Europe but the American government took away his passport to stop him performing in other countries. This time line produced by Rutgers University provides a detailed account of his life and times (spartacus)

bullet www.9thcavalry.com/flipper.htm   bio om Henry  Flipper (evt til engelsk)
The son of slaves from Georgia, Henry Flipper became the first African American to enter West Point. In June, 1877, Flipper became the first black officer in the United States army. He fought with distinction in the Indian Wars but when Colonel William Rufus Shafter became commanding officer of Fort Davis in 1881, he was immediately sacked Flipper as quartermaster. Flipper suspected what he later called a systematic plan of persecution, and is said to have been warned by civilians at the post of a plot by white officers to force him from the army. Soon afterwards he was accused of embezzling $3,791.77 from commissary funds. A court-martial found him not guilty of embezzlement but convicted him of conduct unbecoming an officer and ordered him dismissed from the Army. In December 1976, nearly 40 years after his death, he was granted a posthumous honorable discharge. A few months later he was given a full military funeral at Thomasville, Georgia. This website provides a copy of his autobiography.
