"... At the center of the site is Robert Knox Sneden, a private in the Union army attached to the 40th New York Volunteers from 1861 through his liberation from the infamous Andersonville, Ga., prison camp near the end of the war. His own story emerges through the excerpts from his newly  discovered journal... Sneden's writing is fresh, straightforward..
But more remarkable still--and perhaps more immediate--are Sneden's detailed watercolor paintings  and the handmade battle maps that illustrate his diaries. It is here that his personal story expands into the larger story of the Civil War, and these sketches are truly unparalleled even amid the  extensive visual resources available for this period. A grim panorama of advancing troops in Virginia, Confederates destroying railroad cars, Union soldiers huddled in Andersonville prison,  a surveillance balloon high above Yorktown, Va.--the 19 sketches and maps here give a striking overview of the war. ...."
