Discovering Charles
Dickens for students
An interesting approach to the work of Charles Dickens that has been created
by Lucy Davis of 'Schools of California Online'. The material has been produced
to help students learn "more about the time and circumstances which
influenced Dickens". Students have a choice of five different cases. Each
case requires the student to visit several Internet sites that specialize in
specific knowledge about Charles Dickens. Case One involves a look at the
everyday life of Charles Dickens. Students visit two Internet sites 'Dickens'
Home' and 'Dickens' House Museum' and are given assignments that involve them
comparing their life with those of people living in 19th England. Case Three
explores the links between Dicken's novels and his experiences of childhood
poverty.(spartacus)

The Importance of Being Oscar
"Oscar Wilde is enjoying a bit of a renaissance of
late. In movies and popular culture, Wilde is emerging as a trenchant and
powerful artist, more than the author of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Querying Spaces is the Web site for an exhibition originally produced at
the Fales Collection of New York University's Elmer Holmes Bobst Library.
The site provides readers with the opportunity to understand both Wilde
and his work; indeed, the site's major claim is that only by understanding
Wilde might we understand the diversity of his work - whether we read the
dramas, the short stories, or the novels. For those who enjoyed The
Importance of Being Earnest, here is an opportunity to get to know a
rather remarkable Wilde." (netsurfer)

Geoff Ryman : online roman : 253 **
Imagine eavesdropping on the thoughts of passengers on a train.
Why is that young woman in leather pants biting her fingernails? Is
the man with a wedding ring happy in his marriage? Where are they
going? What will happen to them after you get off the train? Novelist
Geoff Ryman took this scenario, added a few clever stylistic
twists, and published it online.
The result is "253: A Novel for the Internet about London
Underground in Seven Cars and a Crash," an addictive trip
through the minds of strangers taking a seven-and-a-half minute ride
on the Bakerloo line of the London tube; the title is derived from the
total of 252 passengers and the train's driver. Using 253 words for
each passenger, Ryman gives their names and ages, describes their
outward appearances, offers some inside information (such as details
on their jobs or families), and reveals what they are thinking or
doing at that moment of the commute. Links allow the reader to move
freely from car to car and passenger to passenger in a nonlinear
fashion. Mock advertisements pepper the narrative, and maps ofeach car
and of the journey itself offer alternate ways to navigate the story.
"253" became a web-to-print phenomenon when it was published
in book form as "253: The Print Remix." In either medium,
what appears to be a tale of a mundane train ride becomes much, much
more--a vicarious look at a few reality- altering minutes from
people's lives. |
