The Robert Burns Encyclopedia
"As a handbook and guide to readers of the poet's poems and letters and
as a reference book to his life, his work and Burns scholarship, it is
invaluable. It also provides a fascinating Scottish backcloth to the
eighteenth century, and is thus enjoyable as a bedside anthology in its
own right."

Keats
"Considered one of England's greatest poets, Keats was a
key element in the Romantic Movement. Known especially for his
love of the country and sensuous descriptions of the beauty of
nature, his poetry also resonated with deep philosophic
questions. A master of blank and lyrical verse, this 1884
collection includes all of Keats's major and minor works."

Digte af Robert Graves : Fairies and

Poems of Gerald Manley Hopkins
"Considered an early Modern poet ahead of
his Victorian time, G. M. Hopkins's verse is notable for his
use of sprung rhythm and intricate use of language and rhyme.
As a Jesuit priest, Hopkins's poems dealt largely in the realm
of religion and his inner conflict, which arose, not from
religious skepticism, but from an inability to give himself
completely to his God. Both his poems and his letters often
reflect an intense dissatisfaction with himself as a poet and
as a servant of God. Since Hopkins never gave permission
for the publication of his verse, his Poems, edited by his friend Robert Bridges, did not appear in print
until 1918."

Thomas Hardy : Wessex Poems and Other Verses
" His verse is spare, unadorned, and unromantic, and its pervasive theme is man's futile struggle
against cosmic forces. Like many of Hardy's novels, the
fifty-one poems of The Wessex Poems and Other Verses are all
set against the bleak and forbidding Dorset landscape, whose
physical harshness echoes that of an indifferent, if not
malevolent, universe. Hardy's vision reflects a world in which
Victorian complacencies were dying but its moralism was not,
and in which science had eliminated the comforting certainties
of religion."
Originally published by Harper, New York 1898.

Housman : A Shropshire Lad
"This collection of verse is Housman's
signature work. Mixing the styles of the traditional English
ballad and Classical verse, theyoung Housman takes on the
growing pains of youth and young love.
His verse is noted for its economy of words and directness of
statement, pictures of the English countryside, and the fusion
of humor and pathos.
Published by K. Paul, Trench, Treubner, London, 1896.

The Poetry of William Butler Yeats
"Yeats was the leader of the Irish
literary renaissance that aimed at reviving ancient Irish
folklore, legends and traditions in new literary works. The
influence of the "Celtic Renaissance" is strong in
Yeats's early poetry in which the poems often center on Irish
mythology and themes and are mystical, slow-paced and lyrical.
In the verse of his middle and later years he renounced his
early transcendentalism; his poetry became stronger, more
physical and realistic." (skulle nok stå under Irland) |

The Oxford Book of English Verse: 1250-1900
"For this Anthology I have tried to
range over the whole field of English Verse from the beginning,
or from the Thirteenth Century to this closing year of the
Nineteenth, and to choose the best. Nor have I sought in these
Islands only, but wheresoever the Muse has followed the tongue
which among living tongues she most delights to honour. To
bring home and render so great a spoil compendiously has been
my capital difficulty. ...
This extensive anthology includes close to 1,000 poems. It was
originally published by Clarendon (Oxford) in 1919. "
