end 1991-92 i heldigste fald. Visse aviser som f.eks. NY Times
kræver (gratis) registrering. For danske aviser brug http://skoda.emu.dk
(kræver abonnement - spørg en lærer; koden må ikke
offentliggøres eller videregives) for de danske aviser.

The
Real Thirteen Days The Hidden History of the Cuban Missile Crisis
fra the national security archive declassified documents
The Real Thirteen Days (A+)
"The Real Thirteen Days, part of the National Security Archive Web
site, uses primary documents to chronicle the events of the Cuban
missile crisis. Students can view the reconnaissance photos, listen to
recordings of the actual White House security briefings, and read the
full text of the declassified documents at the Real Thirteen Days site.
Included are historical essays and a chronology that begins with 1959
and describes the evolution of relations between the United States and
the Soviet Union through the crisis in 1962. This is an excellent
resource for students reporting on the Cuban missile crisis, teachers
who want to supplement a history lesson, or anyone with an interest in
this historical event."

Pretext for Cuba Invasion in 1962 NS archive "In his new exposé of the National Security Agency entitled Body
of Secrets, author James Bamford highlights a Joint Chiefs of Staff document
from 1961 describing U.S. plans to covertly engineer various pretexts that
would justify a U.S. invasion of Cuba. These proposals - part of a
secret anti-Castro program known as Operation Mongoose - included staging
the assassinations of Cubans living in the United States, simulating an attack on the U.S. naval
base at Guantanamo, Cuba, and concocting a "Remember the Maine"
incident by blowing up a U.S. ship in Cuban waters and then blaming the
incident on Cuban sabotage." (nyhedsbrev)

In October 1962 the world was on the verge of a nuclear war. President
Kennedy of the United States had issued a war-alert command. Polaris submarines
armed with nuclear weapons took up positions close to the Soviet Union. B-52
bombers also with nuclear weapons were ordered into the air. A further 105
short-range missiles in Europe and 156 intercontinental missiles in the United
States were prepared for firing at the Soviet Union. What had brought the world
to the brink of destruction? These activities cover the history of Cuba, Fidel
Castro, Bay of Pigs, Nikita Khrushchev and John F. Kennedy and ends up with a
simulation on the Cuban Missile Crisis.

has declassified dozens of secret records relating to the invasion,
amounting to some 480 pages. The Cuban documents include intelligence
reports on U.S. preparations, and Fidel Castro's directives during the
fighting -- records that "shed substantial light on Cuba's ability to

of historical exploration," according to Thomas Blanton, executive

Newly Declassified Documents Show Risk of Nuclear Incidents During
Cuban Missile Crisis Submarine Chase*
Washington, D.C., 31 October 2002-- Forty years ago today, the U.S.
Navy
forced to the surface a Soviet submarine, which unbeknownst to the
Navy, was
carrying a nuclear-tipped torpedo. This was the third surfacing of a
Soviet
submarine during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After a day of
persistent tracking
by the U.S. destroyer, the Charles P. Cecil, commanded by Captain
Charles
Rozier, Soviet submarine B-36, commanded by Captain Aleksei Dubivko,
exhausted
its batteries forcing it to come to the surface. On 27 and 30
October
respectively, U.S. Navy anti-submarine warfare (ASW) forces surfaced
Soviet
submarines B-59 and B-130. No one on the U.S. side knew at the
time that the
Soviet submarines were nuclear-armed; no one knew that conditions in
the
Soviet submarines were so physically difficult and unstable that
commanding
officers, fearing they were under attack by U.S. forces, may have
briefly
considered arming the nuclear torpedoes. Indeed, one of the
incidents--the
effort to surface B-59 on 27 October 1962--occurred on one of the most
dangerous days of the missile crisis, only hours after the Soviet
shoot-down
of a U-2 over Cuba and as President Kennedy was intensifying threats
to invade
Cuba.
Today the National Security Archive releases on its World Wide Web
page a
briefing book of new U.S. documentation and Russian
memoirs on the submarine
chase during October and November 1962.
The new material includes:
--U.S. Navy cable traffic and reports describing the Navy's
persistent efforts
to compel Soviet submarines to come to the surface and identify
themselves
--for the first time, a complete set of formerly top secret charts
produced by
the Chief of Naval Operations "Flag Plot" showing on a day-by-day
nearly
hourly basis the location of the U.S. blockade force, the growing U.S.
invasion force, and the movements of Soviet submarines and merchant
ships.
--newly translated memoirs of Soviet submariners, including the
recently
translated account of B-59 Captain Dubivko, describing the instability
and
trying conditions on board the submarines
-- details on the movement of Soviet submarines with orders to
engage in
combat operations if the conflict over Cuba escalated. One submarine
was sent
to the Caribbean to protect Soviet transport ships; another, which
patrolled
the area around Pearl Harbor, had orders to attack the U.S. base if
war broke
out." (nyhedsbrev fra NS Archives)
