SECRETS OF
THE NORMAN INVASION
The
Secrets of the Norman Invasion
"Nick Austin's website is a fascinating example of how one person's
research can contribute to the educational understanding of a whole
community. What started as a personal investigation into where the Normans
landed in 1066, has turned into a rich resource for all students of the
period. The website contains eleven sections of the Bayeux Tapestry. Each
one is accompanied by a detailed commentary of the events shown in the
section. Nick Austin also provides several Domesday Maps that relate to
the area where the Normans landed in 1066. "

The Norman Conquest School

"1066 was a tough year for
the Anglo-Saxons: three kings, multiple invasions, a
comet. Yes, the Dark Ages weren't everything they're
cracked up to be, and this kid-friendly Web site is a
fine online guide to that fateful year. ... There are
also maps, a timeline, and a quiz. The pages deal with
the complications of the succession crisis, battle
weapons and tactics at Hastings, and the aftermath of
the battle as the Normans established themselves as
England's new rulers. The Norman Conquest's historical
importance is not merely of a change of dynasty;
rather, it marksthe beginning of the rise of England
as a unified state and great power, as well as the
birth of the English language as it's spoken today.
Now your middle and high school pupils can learn more
about this critical event." (netsurfer)

www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/NORQ2.htm Battle of Hastings 1066
"On 1st October 1066 King Harold was celebrating his victory over King
Hardrada at a banquet in York when he heard that William, Duke of Normandy had
landed at Pevensey Bay. King Harold immediately assembled those housecarls who
had survived Stamford Bridge and marched south. When Harold realised he was
unable to take William by surprise he positioned himself at Senlac Hill near
Hastings. On 14th October 1066, Harold II's army fought on foot against the
attacks of Norman cavalry and infantry. After a long struggle, lasting for most
of the day, Harold was killed and the Normans were victorious. This online
activity involves the students looking at the various accounts we have of the
battle." (spartacus)

The Domesday Book Online
The Domesday Book was commissioned in December 1085 by William the Conqueror,
who invaded England in 1066. The first draft was completed in August 1086 and
contained records for 13,418 settlements in the English counties south of the
rivers Ribble and Tees (the border with Scotland at the time). This site has
been set up to enable visitors to find out the history of the Domesday Book and
to give an insight into life at the time of its compilation. This site does not
contain all the information contained in the original text, however does include
a list of every settlement existing in 1086.
