Doctor-Assisted Suicide : Guide to Web Sites and the Literature
"There are many vantage points from which to consider doctor- (physician-)
assisted suicide. Any serious consideration of the topic inevitably draws
from ethics, law, medical ethics, medical practices, philosophy, psychology,
public policy, and religion as one explores topics surrounding the central issue of the right to die. The
selections gathered here provide varied points of view (pro and con), some
history as well as currency in coverage, and include electronic as well as print
sources. While there is necessarily a selectivity given the
present volume of information, sources presented here are among the best and
most informative available.." (newsletter)

A Matter of Life and Death ***
Journal E
"A Matter of Life and Death" follows the story of John Graham
and his painful bout with pancreatic cancer. The documentary,
which begins in 1996, tells how Graham's cancer lingered for
15 years after he was first diagnosed--much longer than the
prognosis of "zero life expectancy" he was first given by his doctors. His situation embodied the debate in Australia during
that time over the legality and ethics of euthanasia. (The
"Rights of the Terminally Ill Act," passed in Australia's
Northern Territory in 1996, has since been repealed.) In this
latest site from "Journal E," photojournalist Michael Lutzky
presents Graham's opinions and the particulars of his illness
against the contrasting arguments of prominent activists and doctors. Lutzky's choice to concentrate on Graham's life lends
a humanity to the debate and subsequently to the site....
Exploring all versions of "A Matter of
Life and Death" will help give visitors a truly three-dimensional
understanding of this social dilemma. "(encyclop. Brit. anm)

Utopia: The Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World *** New York Public Library
"Utopia: The Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World"
examines how utopia has been interpreted in Western art since
ancient times. The chronological exhibition begins with "Sources,"
a gallery of images depicting the concept of utopia in such places
as the Garden of Eden and Cockaigne, an imaginary land "where he who sleeps the most earns the most." Imaginary and theoretical
"Other Worlds"--More's "Utopia," William Penn's
Philadelphia, and
the New World--give way to "Utopia in History," a review of
attempts in Europe and the United States to establish model
communities. "Dreams and Nightmares" shows the sometimes negative
effects of these attempts in the 20th century, and "Metaworlds"
looks at the Internet as the next utopia. ... and related links lend further context to the online presentation.
"Utopia: The Search for the Ideal Society in the Western World" is an artful exploration of the "perfect" world. (Britannica)

The Evolutionary Tales
"A rhymed-verse parody of The Canterbury
Tales, this site produced by Ronald L. Ecker,
deals engagingly with the overwhelming evidence
for evolution and the pseudoscientific nature of
"creation science" or "intelligent design theory."
Ten experts (eight scientists, a philosopher,
and a Bible scholar), on their way to a
creationist "Back to Genesis" seminar, tell ten
"tales" - lively verse essays in their fields of
specialization - about evolutionary theory and
the fallacies of creationism. The Bible scholar,
who has the last word, makes the point that
evolution and creation - shorn of fundamentalist
biblical literalism - need not be incompatible
concepts. With extensive notes, bibliography,
and index, the site is continuously updated to
include the latest discoveries and perspectives."
