Cyborg 1.0 : Johns Hopkins/North Carolina: www.icat.ncsu.edu/projects/retina/
Dobelle: www.dobelle.com/index.html
Once upon a time cybernetic organisms, a.k.a. cyborgs, belonged only to the realm of science fiction; today fantasy is fast becoming reality. Artificial vision is a topic that can stimulate anyone's imagination. Think about a device able to give vision to sightless people - as for Star Trek's Geordi LaForge, able to see thanks to the VISOR (Visual Input Sensory Optical Reflector), eventually replaced by a cortical implant. Scientists at Johns Hopkins and North Carolina State University studied and implanted an artificial retina into the eye of blind volunteers, letting them see again. Checking their site will open your eyes about how far science frontiers have moved. Prepare to download movies and .pdf files, if you want to wholly appreciate it. Another institution, the Dobelle Institute, interfaced a digital video camera with the visual cortex of a volunteer's brain, creating a portable device for vision. The system can be also directly interface with a PC or a television. There are even more artificial body function at the Dobelle site: devices that control pain directly through the nerves or that stimulate nerves for breathing or emptying the bladder. We'll bet that it cost a darned sight more than $6 million, too.

Evolution

bullet www.ncseweb.org/     National Center for Science Education
bullet bob.nap.edu/html/creationism/     National Academy of Science   -  om Evolution
"...In Science and Creationism, the National Academy of Sciences puts forward an authoritative synthesis of the issues involved. In our experience, many of creationism's criticisms of evolution are either inaccurate or outdated. The NAS deals with the most frequently cited arguments and discusses the problems. More than that, though, the Academy takes the very clear position that creationism "has no place in any science curriculum at any level". This site is the text of an Academy booklet that explains the current scientific understanding of biological evolution. The National Center for Science Education is a nonprofit organization with the sole mission of protecting the teaching of evolution against sectarian proponents of such propositions as scientific creationism. In addition to other services, the Center tracks legislation relating to the teaching of science" (netsurfer).
