Tale of Three Cities *** National Geographic
"In his novel "Emile," author
and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau writes, "Cities are the
abyss of the human species." Taking a decidedly more positive
approach to urbanization is "Tale of Three Cities," a site
based on a "National Geographic" article from last August.
This site offers nuggets of information on 1st-century Alexandria,
11th-century Cordoba, and 21st-century New York City, including
audio clips of three scholars offering their interpretations of some
of the defining facets of each city."

"The Cities/Buildings Database is a collection of digitized
images of buildings and cities drawn from across time and
throughout the world, available to students, researchers and
educators on the web. Begun in 1995, the Database was conceived as a
multi-disciplinary resource for students, faculty, and others in the
academic community. It has grown steadily since then, with
contributions from a wide range of scholars, and now contains over
5000 images ranging from New York to Central Asia, from African
villages, to the Parc de la Villette, and conceptual sketches and
models of Frank Gehry's Experience Music Project. These have all
been scanned from original slides or drawn from documents in the
public domain. They are freely available to anyone with access to
the Web for use in the classroom, student study, or for individual
research purposes.. Researchers can search for buildings by country,
city, style, title, architect, date of construction, as well as
other fields. "(webct)

Collapse: Why Do Civilizations Fall? **
Annenberg/CPB Project
"Collapse: Why Do Civilizations Fall?" delves into the demise of the Maya,
Mesopotamia, Anasazi, Mali, and Songhai empires. The site briefly describes the patterns and deviations in each rise and fall;
while these accounts are informative enough, "Collapse" would be
merely adequate without its "hands-on" exercises. In "Looking for
Clues at Copan," for instance, visitors are given examples of archaeological finds that help explain why the Mayan civilization
ended. "Collapse" is an engaging exploration
of ancient societies, their evolution, and their end. (enycyclo brit)

... "Beyond Affliction: The Disability History Project," a
four-hour
documentary about attitudes toward disabled people since the 1800s,
first delivered via the relentlessly linear medium of radio. The
site offers extended clips from the radio series and supplements
them with primary sources-documents, images, and audio interviews
with transcripts--rearranged across a broad field defined by theme
and topic. This information gives Web users a power that listeners
necessarily lack: the opportunity (and responsibility) to select,
rearrange, and juxtapose these materials effectively. For example, by reading sources and hearing original interviews, you can decide
whether you think the dark shadows of eugenics were probed deeply
enough in the version that made it on the air. The remediation taking place at "Beyond Affliction: The Disability History
Project" goes farther than issues of interpreting evidence; it
helps transform an already innovative radio documentary into
something else entirely |

Time Magazine recently launched its own searchable database of all

Each cover can be viewed both in thumbnail format and as a
high-resolution 400 x 527-pixel image. However, Collective.net's
search function lets you see items from several collections
simultaneously. For example, a search for "beatles"
displays album covers as well as Life Magazine covers featuring the
