In this radio series Melvyn Bragg follows his long historical exploration of the Routes of English with Voices of the Powerless, in which he explores the lives of the ordinary working men and women of Britain at six critical moments across the last 1,000 years. The first series subjects covered included the Norman Conquest, the Peasants' Revolt, the Reformation in Essex and Suffolk, the Plantation of Ireland in the Counties of Armagh and Tyrone, the English Civil War and the Plague. The new series began on 24th July and includes the topics Industrial Revolution: Man and Manufacture, the Napoleonic Wars, Transportation, Highland Clearances, First World War and Miners in the Depression.
