However, Tony Blair, the prime minister changed his mind and last week called for a fully appointed House of Lords. On 4th February, 2003, the House of Lords voted for this measure (335 votes to 110) but it was defeated in the House of Commons (323 votes to 245) . This Guardian website includes a large collection of articles on the various attempts to reform the House of Lords.

Voted one of the nation's 100 best-loved books in the BBC's recent Big Read event, "The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists" is an influential classic of working class literature. This unique resource, numbering 1,700 fragile pages, has previously only been accessible to researchers who had to make the trip to London. Now, thanks to a grant from the New Opportunities Fund, readers around the world can access the manuscript online and read the book as the author intended, both with and without the publishers' amendments. Accompanying the online manuscript are photographs, documents and other ephemera from the Tressell family archive. (spartacus)

Social Class om klasser og social stratifikation
" Sorting members of a society according to some criteria of "importance" in the society has been with us since humans put down their clubs long enough to congregate together. The Hewett School of Norwich, Norfolk UK has waded in on this pervasive practice with some interesting observations. .... individuals are sorted into levels of esteem in which they are held by the culture doing the sorting. For example, there are ample examples of nations and regions that sort people according to race. In Northern Ireland, people are sorted according to which religion they embrace. In academic circles, people are sorted according to the level of academic degree they may hold. ...

An article by David Goodhart in the February edition of the Prospect Magazine has caused a great deal of controversy in Britain. The article looks at the future of the welfare state in Britain and other European countries. Goodhart argues that diversity, individualism and mobility characterises developed economies mean that more of our lives is spent among strangers. "We share public services and parts of our income in the welfare state, we share public spaces in towns and cities where we are squashed together on buses, trains and tubes, and we share in a democratic conversation - filtered by the media - about the collective choices we wish to make. ... But as Britain becomes more diverse that common culture is being eroded."
